Interview: Aleksandra Urošević, band :resound
Quality is a category opened for discussion. Quality is the thing some people have defined as such. On the other hand, :resound creates music intuitively. We are not professional musicians, so we lean on each other's intuition. In this situation we, ourselves, represent the quality criteria. It's not like that in real life, so for us the band represents a space where we are free and we enjoy that

In beginning of June in the Cultural Centre "GRAD", Belgrade band :resoundpresented their EP called Nasty Scratches with three new songs, that the crossover sound (that's how they define their sound) fans can download for free from the internet.
They have been present on the music scene since 2003, the band got together by accident, rounding up a number of people with totally opposite interests. At the moment the band consists of two vocals, male and female, and guys playing keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. Their interests are totally different, but they say that it was the music that got them together.
Aleksandra Urošević - female vocal of the band :resound is speaking to WAVE magazine on band itself, its creation and beginnings, success so far, the definition of quality and how important it is.
How it all began?
- The Band :resound came together relatively accidently. Members of different Belgrade bands met once at a rehearsal. We made a song together and just kind of became attached to the project. In the meantime a lot of people passed through the band. Everyone left a mark, and some of them still participate actively in creating the music (for example our former guitarist Vladimir Kerkez is now the bands producer).
There are six of you, and every one of you does something different, besides the music. How do you "connect" musically? How do you define your genre?
- Members of the band are interested in all kinds of stuff: from civic activism and theory all the way to directing and animation. Every one of us has different activities that reflect individual character. We agree on many things, but we also have a lot of opposite opinions. Even our taste in music is not the same. All of these things influence the way we understand and create music. It's because all of this, that we find it hard to define the genre of what we play. The most appropriate name is - crossover.
What have you done so far, and what are you planning to do next?
- :resound exists for a very long time, but up until now we haven't been recording our songs. It would probably be very interesting to hear the evolution of our sound, because the band changed over time, and the biggest changes to the sound were the result of the member changes in the band.
A year ago we published our first official single called About a boy, and this April we published an EP Nasty Scratches, there are three songs on it and you can download them from the internet for free.
What is the measure of popularity for a band these days - the number of albums, number of concerts in those "important" venues, number of hits on YouTube or "likes" on Facebook?
- We live in a society of spectacular events, and the bigger they are it probably means more popularity. Although with internet the music market lost its power in the music world, it still is one of the main influences on the popularity of a band: if the media and publishers can make money off of you, they will push you. The music is becoming almost non-relevant.
Are you planning some shows abroad? How is the music "exported" to the foreign market?
- We are not sure how it works on our own market. Our songs are totally free, available to everyone and published under the CC licence, which means they can be distributed and used freely, but only in non-commercial purposes. We love doing shows, so if we get the invitation to play anywhere in the country, we certainly won't say no.
